TORONTO AS THEATRE

So, I’m getting on the Dundas Streetcar the other day at the corner of Spadina. It’s raining and there are a lot of people getting on and off the car. In a matter of seconds, a car pulling in front of the stream of people getting on the streetcar sits on the horn, as if to say, “hey, people, how dare you not let me illegally get through this intersection?”, while a unkempt drunk man oozed down the streetcar stairs and promptly collapsed himself onto the car right behind angry driver car, while simultaneously, a young woman carrying a mop seemed oblivious to all the potential eye-poking she was doing to those of us caught between the two other events.

This is just another one of those moments that we all have every day in the city. Those dramatic (or slapstick?) events that occur constantly around us.

But Toronto is also a city abounding with great small intentional theatre. On any given day, there are oodles of interesting theatre works being written and produced. There are tons of talented actors, directors, stage managers, writers, set designers, costumers around us, working away on their passions.

This month Gadzooks! will be celebrating the theatre of our city, be it those random moments that happen on the streetcar – or by exploring some exciting upcoming theatrical productions and meeting some of the people who work to bring us some the best theatre the world has to offer.

If you would like to contribute to any episodes this month with stories about the Toronto theatre scene or random moments of city theatre, let us know!
