Meet Adam Waxman a Toronto actor who is currently programming the 4th annual DareArts drama camp. DareArts is an inspired program that allows children to learn important life skills (discipline, action, responsibility and excellence) through arts education. This summer, kids who are often those living in “high risk” environments will have, with Waxman, the opportunity to explore and enact Romeo and Juliet, including a trip to see this year’s production at Stratford.
Where did you grow up? Why?
I grew up with a yellow tricycle and a leather canteen on the streets of Toronto. It’s where all my explorations began.
How long have you been in Toronto?
Since before hockey helmets became mandatory—although I don’t always wear mine.
Toronto is…
A parking lot with too few attendants. But it’s my home and I love it.
What do you do for a living?
I look for work…acting, mainly.
What keeps you busy?
Questionnaires…
What was your favourite summer job?
I once worked as a housekeeper at a Tokyo hotel—everything I’ve ever done before or since has become my favourite summer job.
Dream job? Why?
I’d like to be a rock star. I’m too good to be confined to karaoke; and I want groupies.
What’s your passion?
Making a connection
If I say jump?
Ask me nicely, and we’ll see…
What do you give back to the No Fly Zone?
I’m very helpful to tourists; and I reset newspaper stands when I see they’ve been knocked over.
What can we do to make Toronto a "world class" city?
Develop more green space; privatize and expand the subway system, and make it pay-as-you-go fare; legalize marijuana to regulate quality and distribution, and to collect the tax revenue; promote arts—in education, and as an occupation.
Are you an artist?
Just give me some crayons and I’ll prove it.
How does art influence your life?
It gives me a positive outlet to rebel; to appreciate a moment; to affect someone, and be affected; to make a perfect mess; to be honest, and vulnerable; to figure out how, instead of asking why.
Hands or feet?
I like hands—they feel so much.
Worst public moment?
Admitting my guilt in traffic court.
Why do you live here?
I was born here. I know where to get all the good discounts. And I love my Mom.
Two Beatles left: Ringo and Paul. Who wins in a smackdown?
Oddly enough: Ringo.
Favourite public space?
The Toronto Music Garden
Who are your favorite artists
Tupac; Art Fry; my Dad.
Mon Chi Chi, My Little Pony, Barbie? discuss.
If this were an election…I think each one has intriguing qualities.
Barbie has definitely been around; weathered many socially topical storms; and still looks good. Mon Chi Chi can put its thumb in its mouth and ears—something I can relate to; and My Little Pony has all those wonderful colours—particularly in the generation II series. However I’d be much more inclined to combine them all as kindling for my next campfire.
