May I redirect your attention to the Gadfly If you don't randomly download music and you aren't taking your chances purchasing a new CD without listening to the content then there aren't many options left to be exposed to upcoming music. Lucky for Toronto 's No-Fly-Zone dwellers, we don't have to waste precious time and money to enjoy emerging indie bands. Pubs and clubs in the area regularly support the unknown struggling musicians. To see the underground of the underground music makers, the average nine-to-five worker might have to take a power nap and grab an extra caffeinated latte before taking in a mid-work-week after mid-night show. But it is worth it. Being sheepish the following morning is the only downfall to venturing out and supporting new music. The mid-week bands are usually teachers, cashiers, bankers, or cooks by day in order to provide financial support to their true passion by night. The newbies to the music scene don't often get choice weekend spots. These bands are usually left playing to sparse crowds during the week. Their weekday gigs are by no means a reflection of their talent. These Electric Lives is a band with drive and determination. Not only do they play steady weekday shows in the No-Fly-Zone and maintain their full time jobs they are also in the process of recording a new album due out this summer. Their exposure comes strictly from shows and the recent success of their My Space account. The site has exploded from 400 to over 30,000 hits in a matter of weeks. These Electric Lives is just one of the bands you can look forward to seeing in the Zone this month. My Top 5 reasons you should see an indie band this month: 1. You will try something different (and you might like it) 2. Indie bands usually have great merchandise (buttons, t-shirts, hoodies…) 3. You will be supporting a sub-culture of music 4. Be social! My mom always said if you do things in groups you will be happier and healthier 5. Because I said so (I don't really have a fifth reason) You can support These Electric Lives this Sunday, March 26, at Clinton 's Tavern 9 pm , April 2, Brunswick House (Sunday Night Live) 8:00 pm , April 12 at the Rivoli 9 pm |
